You can bridge the gap between recreational and competition volleyball if you join a league. Leagues for children and adults tend to be locally based and community organized. Before joining a league, you should review the scoring methods and other rules of volleyball. Read on to learn how to join a volleyball league.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

    Familiarize Yourself With Volleyball Scoring

  1. Step 1

Watch a volleyball game on television or in person to understand scoring. Points are scored in volleyball when the opposing team causes the ball to hit the floor within the court boundaries.

  2. Step 2

Keep an eye out for errors. Errors can happen in many ways such as allowing the ball to bounce, hitting the ball outside the boundary lines or when a player with the ball touches the net. The non-erring team then wins a point.

  3. Step 3

Notice that even when one team scores enough points to win the game (25), play does not always end. To win a volleyball game, one team must score 25 points and be ahead of the opposing team by at least two points.

  4. Research Volleyball Associations

  5. Step 1

Visit the website for USA Volleyball. See the Resources section below for a link. USA Volleyball is the United States Olympic recognized governing organization for the sport of volleyball in America.

  6. Step 2

Click on the "Wanna' Play" link on the left of the USA Volleyball home page to begin your search for a league.

  7. Step 3

Find your local volleyball region. Follow the "Regional Volleyball Associations" link on the Wanna' Play page. A map of the United States will appear. Just click on the region you live in.

  8. Step 4

Write down the name, address, phone number and website address for the regional volleyball commissioner in your region.

  9. Register to Join a Volleyball League

  10. Step 1

Determine what type of volleyball league you fit into. Most leagues offer at least boys, girls and adult leagues.

  11. Step 2

Log onto the website of the league you are interested in.

  12. Step 3

Fill out and turn in the registration form. Typically, people over the age of 18 may register online. Younger players will be required to print a paper application and have their parents sign it.

  13. Step 4

Attend try-outs. Busy leagues may only have room for a limited number of people, so each applicant will be required to try out for the team.

Tips & Warnings
  • A complete list of official volleyball (indoor and outdoor) rules can be found on the USA Volleyball website. See the Resources section for a link.
  • Most league memberships must be renewed annually after you join.
