Volleyball is a great way to get exercise and have fun with a large group of friends at the same time. All you need to do to get started is to mark off a volleyball court, set up a net and review the rules of play. Specific net set up instructions will vary by type of court and net system. Read on to learn how to set up a volleyball net.
Instructions
-
Select Your Volleyball Net
-
1
Consider how long you plan to have your net up when choosing a net. Nets that will remain up for a long time should be higher quality to withstand the elements.
-
2
Opt for nets with steel or Kevlar support cables for a more sturdy net.
-
-
3
Select a net with rope support cables to save money. Rope supports are best for short-term use, as they stretch over time and allow the net to sag.
-
4
Visit an online volleyball retailer like Volleyball Market. See the Resources section below for a link.
Mark Out Your Court
-
5
Find a flat area to use as your court. Make sure there are no tree branches or power lines over the area.
-
6
Mark out the court. It should be a rectangle measuring 60 by 30 feet.
-
7
Check to be sure there is about 10 feet of clear space around your court. Volleyball play often spills off the court, so you really do need the extra room.
-
8
Bisect your court by drawing a line down the center to create two 30 foot sides.
-
9
Draw another line parallel to the mid court line, 9 feet 10 inches back from the mid court line on each side of the net.
Plant Your Net Poles
-
10
Dig a post hole on each side of the center line. The holes should be three feet beyond the boundary line.
-
11
Insert your poles and secure them by following the manufacturer's instructions.
Set Up Your Net
-
12
Thread the net cables through the holes on the poles according to the maker's instructions.
-
13
Use net tensioning straps (if included) to pull the net taut.
-
14
Secure the net supports to keep the net in place during play.

Tips & Warnings
Try using a chalk line on grass or concrete surfaces to mark out your court.
Proper volleyball net height is 8 feet from the top of the net to the ground.
Freestanding net systems let you set up a volleyball net without planting poles, but they can be very expensive.
