As one of the greatest fictional sleuths of all time, Sherlock Holmes, along with his companion Doctor Watson are held in great fondness by the citizens of London. If you know the right places to look, it is not too hard a task to explore Sherlock Holmes’s London as described in the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Explore Sherlock Holmes’s London with a guided tour of the famous detective’s stomping grounds. On Thursdays, at 14.30pm from the Embankment tube stop, you can follow in the footsteps of Holmes and Watson with information provided by knowledgeable tour guides.

  2. Step 2

Explore a recreation of the 221B Baker Street living room at Sherlock Holmes’s pub in Charring Cross. Other stops on the tour include Covent Garden’s famous Opera House and the bustling market in the same area.

  3. Step 3

Walk along the gas-lit alley of the Strand, and get a real feel of old London town as described in the books and seen in the films. The tour ends at the excellent recreation of Holmes’s famous study made famous in the adventure "The Hound of the Baskervilles."

  4. Step 4

Explore Sherlock Holmes’s London at your own pace with a leisurely afternoon walk around London. 221B Baker Street is Sherlock Holmes’s address and the first floor overlooking Baker Street is home to the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Holmes’s famous study is replicated exactly as described in the books and you can have your photograph taken sitting in Holmes’s armchair.

  5. Step 5
    The Lyceum Theatre
    The Lyceum Theatre

View some of the famous sights described in the books as you explore Sherlock Holmes’s London, then check out St Bart’s hospital where Holmes first met Doctor Watson. The Lyceum Theatre is also another feature in the book "The Sign of Four."

  6. Step 6

Join the Sherlock Holmes Society. The society has weekends and special days on which they meet and explore Sherlock Holmes’s London and visit the sites of some of his famous cases. The Society is open to all and also holds informal meetings around London.
