How to Hike Matagorda Island in Texas

Matagorda Island is a barrier island off the coast of Texas which is managed as the Matagorda Island National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is sanctuary to 19 endangered species of birds and other wildlife. Matagorda Island is very primitive, with no electricity or running water, and no motorized private vehicles are allowed. Access to Matagorda Island is by private boat or charter boat only.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes or river sandals
  • Water and food
  • Loose, layered seasonal clothing
  • Insect repellant
  • Camera
  • Sunscreen
  • Swimwear
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Plastic bag for trash

Step1
Charter a boat or hop a ferry from Port O'Conner to Matagorda Island in Texas.
Step2
Catch a shuttle to the other side of the island after arriving at the docks.
Step3
Hike the beach and interior island as far as you want to. The island is 38 miles long.
Step4
Visit the lighthouse built in 1852 still standing at the northern end of the island.
Step5
Return to the docks and spend some time bank fishing before setting up camp or leaving the island.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider bringing a mountain bike to explore more of the island.
  • Camping is allowed by permit only.
  • Bring plenty of food and water; there is none available on the island.
