How to Decide on a College Major

The fun of graduation—and the hangover after the graduation parties—is gone, and now it's time for college. Deciding on a college major can be an overwhelming task. But don't panic. Many college students change their majors a few times during their college careers. There are several ways to go about deciding on a college major, and there are some resources out there for those who can't make the decision alone.

1. List your interests. Then research available college majors, and compare them to your list of interests. Chances are you'll find more than one major that corresponds to something you like.
2. Study course brochures for the major you are deciding on. Talk with senior students about their experiences and what lies ahead academically for you and if that chosen course is one you would definitely like to pursue.
3. Speak with a career counselor at your college. He can offer advice and insight you may not get elsewhere. The counselor can help you make the right decision by steering you toward the right faculty or student leader who can answer questions about a specific major.
4. Take some assessment tests. They can be found at the career services office at your college or online. Also check out the MyMajors website and websites that offer assessment tests.
5. Sit in on a few classes related to your major to help make your decision. Consider an internship in the field to expose you to the types of jobs you might find after college. Interview people working in your field of study to determine if this might be a career path for you.
