How to Apply Pencil Eyeliner

Applying pencil eyeliner correctly can make your eyes look bigger and more dramatic. Pencil eyeliner is much easier to apply than liquid eyeliner and comes in many fun colors. With a little practice you can achieve a professional look with a quick stroke of the pencil.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a color that compliments your eye color. Green eyes look good with a brown, bronze or sage eyeliner. Brown eyes look good with a brown, sage or even violet eyeliner. Blue-eyed ladies can choose from charcoal, brown or navy eyeliner.

  2. Step 2

Choose eyeliner that is easy to apply. Ask for samples before you buy one. Draw a line on the back of your hand to see how much pressure is needed to create a line. You are looking for a pencil that requires little pressure to create a line. The softer the pencil, the better the pencil.

  3. Step 3

Close one eye. Try not to hold it closed with your fingers or pull on the lid. Pulling and tugging on your delicate eye skin can stretch it and cause premature lines.

  4. Step 4

Start with the upper inner corner of your eyelid. Draw a line as close to the lash line as possible. You can use short strokes if it's easier for you. Continue all the way to the outer corner of your eye. Keep the line thin on the inner corner and thicker on the outer corner.

  5. Step 5

Draw a line under the bottom lashes starting with the outer corner working inward. Keep the line close to the lash line. Use short strokes again if it's easier and continue to the inner corner. Again, keep the line thin on the inner corner and thicker on the outer corner.

  6. Step 6

Smudge the line if you prefer a thicker, softer look. You can use the opposite end of the pencil or the "smudge tip" of some eyeliners. A finger sometimes works, too. You are just gently smudging the line into a softer, wider line using short strokes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to apply the eyeliner all around the eye. Only applying eyeliner to the outer half of your eyes can make them look smaller or just darn silly.
  • Apply your eye shadow before your eyeliner. Apply mascara after the eyeliner.
  • Don't apply eye makeup to your inner eyelid. The eyeliner can cause irritation and introduce bacteria into your eye.
