How to Identify a Norwegian Forest Cat

Norwegian Forest cats, once known as SkogKatts and also known as Wedgies, have mild temperaments. They are gentle cats who are often very good with children and other pets. This breed may have a soft but firm control over its environment. Norwegian Forest cats love their families and are slow to acclimate to strangers, but when they do they take to their newfound friends wholeheartedly.

Instructions

1. Gaze into her eyes. Norwegian Forest cats have almond-shaped, brilliant, emerald-green eyes adorned with a streak of gold. To accent these vivid eyes, they have triangular-shaped faces.

2. Run your fingers through her long hair. These cats have two coats. One is a winter downy undercoat that they shed during spring. The other is a long and silky overcoat which remains year round.

3. Count the colors. Norwegian Forest cats have very clearly defined markings that come in a variety of shapes and colors including striped, spotted and Himalayan.
   
   

4. Measure his ear hair. The hair in this breed's ears can be as long as 4 inches.
   
   

5. Keep an eye on his back end. A Norwegian Forest Cat's tail can be over 12 inches when fully fanned.
   
   

6. Watch out for lions. When they mature, these cats have full manes. The density of the fur on their chests will fluctuate with the weather, but the fur always returns in the middle of a cold winter.
   

Tips & Warnings

• Use a medium-tooth comb to brush Norwegians. You can untangle this breed's coat without pulling excessively on the skin.
