How to Identify an Egyptian Mau

Often described as visually striking, the Egyptian Mau is believed by historians to be the breed domesticated by its namesake culture. Maus are extremely loyal cats. They choose a family and connect with it in a dedicated manner. Egyptian Maus are often show cats. They are considered to be graceful in the same way their African Wildcat ancestors are. Despite its social nature, this breed is shy around strangers.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Count the spots. This once-worshipped breed of cat is the only breed to be naturally spotted. These cats have stripes on their chests that mimic a necklace and markings above the cheeks commonly referred to as mascara lines.

  2. Step 2

    Consider the color. Egyptian Maus come in four shades of blue: spotted blue, silver blue, smoky blue and solid blue.

  3. Step 3

    Listen up. This breed is very vocal when pleased. They will sing while whipping their tails back and forth at high speeds and pawing the ground in front of them.

  4. Step 4

    Hold her. The Maus are thin but medium density cats. Females range from 6 to 8 pounds while males weigh as much as 12 pounds.

  5. Step 5

    Look him in the eyes. This breed has bright green eyes and wide-set ears. This breed is known as inquisitive-looking.

Tips & Warnings
  • Egyptian Mau cats have an extra patch of skin before their hind legs to allow for greater extension for jumping.
  • Maus are easily leash trained and often love to travel.
  • These cats are very intelligent. They often enjoy playing games, and they know the names of their toys. They sometimes take their toys and hide them, then refuse to retrieve them later.
