How to Identify a Devon Rex Cat

Described as being a mix of a monkey and Dennis the Menace in a cat's body, Devon Rex cats are often the delight of owners. The Devon breed is an offshoot of the Cornish Rex breed. Devons are very active cats. They are powerful jumpers and love to climb.

Instructions

1. Look while he listens. Devon Rex cats have low-set, oversized ears.

2. Inspect the eyes. Large eyes and a small, upturned nose give this cat a face often described as a pixie quality.

3. Brush your hand down her back. The generally wavy fur has curly patches. Coat quality will vary from thin curls to a wavy, thick and close lying coat.

4. Size him up. Devon Rex cats are mid-sized and compact. They often weigh a little more than people expect them to. They average between 6 to 9 pounds.

5. Feel her skin. These cats are often warm to the touch, although their body temperatures are not higher than average.

Tips & Warnings

• Many people with cat allergies find a safe pet in this breed. Devons shed so little that they are believed by some not to shed at all. These cats are very low maintenance. They require nail clipping and bathing but very little brushing, which is another benefit for people with allergies.
• The large ears of the Devon Rex at times require cleaning. Check the ears occasionally for dirt or possible insect residue.
• Watch your food. These cats will be mischievous, getting into what they aren't supposed to and will mooch off your "people food."
