How to Identify a Burmese Cat

Burmese cats are from Burma and are the product of Siamese cats. They come in both dark and light colors. Lighter-colored offspring were originally called Malayans but were later established to be a dilute division of the Burmese breed.

1. Check the color. Burmese are single-color cats that may have slight variations throughout the coats. This type of cat comes in sable, champagne, blue and platinum.

2. Pick up the cat. Burmese are dense cats and often referred to as bricks covered in silk. They are known for weighing considerably more than people expect.

3. Feel the fur. The coat of a Burmese is very short, soft and close lying. It also tends to reflect light, giving it a glossy appearance.

4. Evaluate the facial features. This breed has a rounded head and sweet facial expressions.

5. Gaze into his eyes. Burmese eyes are large and golden yellow in color.
