British Shorthairs were first recognized in Rome for their hunting abilities and physical strength. They soon became known for their calm demeanor and loyalty to humans. These intelligent cats have become favorites in America, especially on television shows. Although still considered rare in the United States, more British Shorthairs are imported every year.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the coloration. British Shorthair cats have a variety of colors. They do have a color shape that sets them apart from many other cats as they do not have the colorpoint formation. The color can present itself as one large angled stripe across the back of the cat or as a solid color.

  2. Step 2

Hold the cat. A British Shorthair cat is a large cat and tends to be quite heavy. The plush fur often gives the holder the feeling of holding a teddy bear.

  3. Step 3

Evaluate the form. British shorthairs tend to be stocky but not obese. Although they do not have an obviously muscular form, they are still visibly strong cats.

  4. Step 4

Look at the eyes. The British Shorthair cat tends to have copper eyes.

  5. Step 5

Feel the soft fur. The coat of a British Shorthair cat is soft and smooth. It is short to medium length and tends to be glossy.

Tips & Warnings

  • It only takes a couple brushings a week to keep British Shorthairs tangle-free and fresh-looking.
