Sexual discussions with your children can be very awkward. However, it is very important to talk to your kids about safe sex in order to decrease the risk that they engage in unprotected sexual activities. There are ways to have these discussions without weirdness occurring between the two of you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Keep things casual. Many parents make the mistake of sitting their child down and lecturing them sternly about the dangers of sex. Instead, start the conversation at a time when you are both relaxed.
Step2
Let them know their options. Avoid preaching merely about abstinence. Let your children also know about birth control options as well.
Step3
Help them understand the importance of safe sex. Let your kids know that using a condom will reduce their chances of becoming pregnant or contracting a sexually transmitted disease.
Step4
Stay upbeat and positive. Let them know that sex can be a joyful thing when it takes place between two people who love each other while using protection.
Step5
Allow them to ask questions. When you talk to your kids about safe sex, they may have awkward questions that you need to answer. Be open and honest with them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't freak out on your child if you discover that they are already having sex. Instead encourage them to be safe and responsible.
  • Don't be surprised if your child is resistant to talking to you about sex. Continue to broach the subject until you feel that you are communicating with your child.
