Hair dye stains can be difficult to remove if they are not treated right away. Once they dry, it becomes more challenging to clean the stain. Hair dye stains are most often found on clothes, bathroom floors and bathroom surfaces and occur during hair dye application.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Rub away the stain right away. The quicker that the hair dye is wiped away, the easier it will be to remove the stain.

  2. Step 2

Try vinegar and warm water to remove hair dye stains from any type of fabric. Keep spraying the vinegar and water mixture directly on the stain. Keep wiping at it until the stain is removed.

  3. Step 3

Use rubbing alcohol on marble surfaces. If the hair dye has stained a marble fixture in your bathroom, use a small amount of rubbing alcohol to remove the stain. Rubbing alcohol can also be used on tile flooring.

  4. Step 4

Put carpet cleaner and warm water on any carpet stains. Scrub at the spot until the hair dye stain has been removed.

  5. Step 5

Clean hair dye stained clothes with dish detergent and ammonia. Soaking cotton and linen clothes in warm water, dish detergent and a small amount of ammonia will remove hair dye stains.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the stain sits for a while, you may need to use the stain removal methods several times until the stain is removed.
  • Hair dye can not be removed from leather and suede. Keep these materials away from the hair dye application process.

on 12/5/2007 Licensed hair dresser as well, and if the color drips on clothes, quickly spray with aerosol hair spray. It will take the color right out. (Could it also be why color doesn't stay "true" as long?!?) It also takes out ballpoint pen ink!

on 10/3/2007 I am a licensed hair stylist and if you wipe up the color stain when you first spill or drip in the floor it shouldn't stain but if you wait then the stain is there. If the surface can be safely bleached then use bleach. I have used "Scrubbing Bubbles to get it off my salon floor. You can also use cigarette ashes to remove the stain.
