A hike across Scotland's Great Glen takes in some of Britain's most famous landmarks, including Lochness, Ben Nevis and a host of museums. By the time you reach Inverness you, will be ready to let your hair down and crash out. The following steps describe a hike across the 'Long Trail,' from Fort William to Inverness.

Things You'll Need:

  • Map
  • Compass
  • Hiking boots
  • Water proofs
  1. Step 1

    Arrive at Fort William, the starting point of the Long Trail. It is also your only chance to climb Ben Nevis mountain, so you might want to stay an extra night.

  2. Step 2

    Start the first leg of your journey to Gairlochy. A 10-mile hike, you can take in Old Inverlochy castle, Corpallsen loch and the Caledonian canal before reaching Gairlocy village.

  3. Step 3

    After an overnight stay at the village, the second part of this Great Glen hike is 12 miles and takes you to South Laggan via forest paths, Clan Cameron museum and Cia-aig waterfall.

  4. Step 4

    After a sleep, it's a 10-mile hike to Fort Augustus via the Leiterferean nature reserve.

  5. Step 5

    From Fort Augustus, the trail takes you to Invermorisen. On this 8-mile hike, you get views of Loch Ness before you finally reach the village of Invermorisen.

  6. Step 6

    Hike 14 miles to Drumnadrochit. Views of Ben Nevis and Loch Ness are the highlights along the way. When you reach the village, you can see the Loch Ness Monster visitors centre.

  7. Step 7

    Hike to Inverness. The final leg is the longest at 18 miles.

Tips & Warnings
  • Book accommodation at each of the 7 destinations before you leave.
  • The hike through Scotland's Great Glen should take 8 days.
