Step 1
Make a detailed list of all the things you want to bring and check them off as you pack them. See this article for a recommended list of essentials.
-
Step 2
Double check that your tent or trailer is in good working order and free from tears or holes before you set out.
-
Step 3
Pack up your vehicle or trailer, checking off items as you pack them. There’s a lot to bring on a camping trip so be sure you don’t forget anything.
-
Step 1
Find a high spot in your camping area. Pitching your tent on high ground will help avoid sleeping in a puddle should it rain.
-
Step 2
Find a shady spot. If possible choose a shady spot to pitch your tent. Tents are notorious for getting very hot when sitting out in direct sunlight so try and pick a cooler spot.
-
Step 3
Look for soft, even ground. The softer and more even your ground the more comfortable you’ll be when sleeping.
-
Step 4
Pitch your tent. Set up your tent according to the directions.
-
Step 5
Make your bed before it gets dark. Bring out all your bedding and assemble your air mattress, sleeping bags, blankets and pillows. Don’t leave this until dark to do as it’s much harder with no light.
-
Step 6
Store all food. Any food that needs to be kept cool should be put on ice if it is not already.
-
Step 1
Find a large, level spot in your campground.
-
Step 2
Back the trailer into your designated spot with the door to the trailer facing out towards your camping area.
-
Step 3
Level your trailer. No ground is completely level so use your trailers jacks and wooden blocks if necessary to further level out your trailer.
-
Step 4
Raise your tent trailer. If you’re using a tent trailer raise it up and assemble all sides and the door according to the trailer’s directions.
-
Step 5
Make your bed. Bring out all your bedding and assemble your air mattress, sleeping bags, blankets and pillows. Don’t leave this until dark to do as it’s much harder with no light.
-
Step 6
Hook up any utilities such as water and electricity. Ensure that you’re stove and fridge is working properly.
-
Step 7
Store all food. Any food that needs to be kept cool should be put in the fridge and other items put away where they can be easily found later.
-
Step 1
When cooking with a campfire, start your fire a half hour to an hour before you plan on cooking your food. Aim for a hot bed of coals at the bottom of the fire pit as opposed to a raging fire. Coals offer an even heat source and you’re less likely to burn your food.
-
Step 2
Once the fire is ready to cook on, flip the metal grill on the fire pit over the fire and use your pots and pans to cook your food as desired.
-
Step 3
For those using their trailer’s stove to cook remove all objects, including curtains, away from the stove and light the burners. Cook food as desired.
