Betting is a popular pastime in the UK, but High Street bookmakers can be intimidating, particularly for the first-time better. Internet gambling means that aspiring gamblers don't even have to set foot in the bookmakers to have a flutter. And with the increase in the number of online bookies, it's now quicker and easier than ever to place a bet.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Credit or debit card
  • Pen and paper

Step1
Choose your bookie. Reading a few bookie reviews and recommendations on betting forums can help you make your choice.
Step2
Sign up for an account with your chosen bookmaker by visiting their website and clicking on "Register" or "Open Account". You will be asked to supply some personal information as well as creating a Username and Password.
Step3
Deposit money into your account. Before placing a bet, you will have to transfer some money into your betting account. This can usually be done with a credit or debit card.
Step4
Formulate a betting strategy. Do you want to back the outsiders, support the favourites or just follow a hunch?
Step5
Choose your event. Click on your chosen topic and look for the match or event you want to bet on. Then click "Bet Now" or "Add to Slip," which will open a betting slip window.
Step6
Review the odds. In the UK, odds are shown in a fraction format that represents the profit you will make if you win. If you're not happy with the odds offered, you might want to try another bookie.
Step7
Choose a stake. How much can you afford to bet? A good rule is to bet only as much as you can afford to lose.
Step8
Check the bet types. The simplest type of bet is a Single. For certain events, you can choose more complex bets like E/W (Each Way, which is like placing two bets) or multiple bets such as Doubles, Trebles and Accumulators, and even some with more exciting names like Yankee, Trixie and Lucky 15.
Step9
Place your bet. This is usually done by clicking on "Check Bet" or "Place Bet" at the bottom of the betting slip. You may be required to log in to your account and transfer money before your bet can be finalised.
Step10
Await the results of the event. If you strike it lucky, you can then withdraw your winnings or use them to bet again.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan to bet on a regular basis, it may be a good idea to get a bank account or credit card specifically for this purpose, to keep your betting wins and losses separate from your regular financial affairs.
  • By law you must be 18 years of age or older to bet.
  • Betting can be addictive so proceed with care.
  • Avoid bookies that require a large initial deposit or charge large withdrawal fees.
