How to Pay Your Road Tax Online

Road tax is a necessity for people who drive any automobile. In order to make it easier to pay, you can now do it over the internet. In just a few easy steps you will then receive your new tax disc through the post.

1. You will first need to visit http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/#. This will give you access to some really useful information and you can then click on "apply for a tax disc."

2. You have to read through the information on this screen carefully before carrying on. Basically you are just confirming that you have valid insurance which fully covers the vehicle as it will be electronically checked. As well as this, the vehicle will be checked for a valid new style MOT test certificate or a GVT test certificate.

3. The first thing that you do to apply for a tax disc is to fill in what vehicle it is that you have. You have to either give a 16 digit reference number that you can find on the renewal reminder or an 11 digit number which can be found in your log book. As well as this, you need to state your number plate too.

4. After the MOT has been electronically checked, you then need to choose what tax disc you want and you can also choose to have it for either 6 months or 1 year.

5. You are now ready to enter your payment details. Note that if you are paying by credit card there is a £2.50 charge on top. If you are paying by direct debit then this is free of charge.

6. After these simple steps you will receive your tax disc within 5 working days.

Tips & Warnings

• If your car is off the road, then it is the law to inform the DVLA about this and your declaration will be valid for 12 months until it expires.
• If you think that your personal details and address which is held by the DVLA is incorrect, then this will stop you from applying for a tax disc or declaring SORN. If this is the case you will need to inform the DVLA right away to notify them about the address and the other details so that you can apply for a tax disc or SORN.
• You need to find out about the rates because they may vary to that shown on your V11 and V85/1 reminders, due to the budget changes.
• If you have only just recently purchased this vehicle and you have not yet received your log book then you should avoid using this service. If you continue to use this service, the previous owner may end up having the tax disc sent to them instead.
