Build a Deer Blind

A deer blind is essential to the sport of hunting, unless you want to sit in the rain or freeing cold while waiting on the "one that almost got away." This project can be created alone, or with help, but remember... come prepared with labor, plans and lumber.

    Instructions

      • 1

Determine size needed (single or double man blind) length by width by height.

      • 2

Treat the lumber with weather treatment to protect against Mother Nature.

      • 3

Build a floor base using a minimum of 2-by-4 frames and cross bracing on 16-inch centers. The floor should be a minimum of half-inch plywood. Be sure to check that the base is square.

      • 4

Follow standard framing practices on exterior walls. Again, use a minimum of 2-by-4s for your uprights and cross bracing. If using plywood, walls should be at least half-inch plywood.

      • 5

Add proper bracing to the four walls, the roof can be attached directly to the top joist. Again, half-inch minimum plywood is recommended. A slight slant to the roof is preferable.

      • 6

Determine position, height and dimensions of door and windows.

      • 7

Cut out the door and window using a jigsaw. Cut three sides first and then attach hinges to the one cut side that will be the hinged side. This helps keep the soon-to-be free swinging units in proper alignment. Cut the fourth side. Door and windows should now swing freely.

      • 8

Attach hooks or other closing devices to door and windows. Support bracing using 1-by-2 boards around the edges of each window and door is advisable to help deter warping of the wood.

      • 9

Use a piece of scrap carpeting for the floor for noise reduction.

      • 10

Add nails or screws on the inside for hanging coats, hats, binoculars or resting guns.
