Constructing a gas fire pit is a fun and rewarding project to undertake. Fire pits come in a variety of materials such as brick, metal and stone. Creating a fire pit for warmth or cooking adds value to property and provides another area for entertaining or relaxing.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fire pit building materials
  • Building permit (if required)
  • Appropriate fire pit design
  • Fire pit fuel
  1. Step 1

Agree upon a gas fire pit design suitable for the landscape and architecture.

  2. Step 2

Purchase building material appropriate for the project. Home improvement stores, such as Lowe's and Home Depot, have much of the material in stock.

  3. Step 3

Understand that permanent fire pits may require an actual pit be dug into the landscape. These pits must be deeper than 1 foot.

  4. Step 4

Construct the surround for the fire pit. Brickwork and stonework must be placed and secured according to local codes. Leave an unfinished area in the surround for the natural gas or propane implements and element to be installed.

  5. Step 5

Install grating if being used for cooking. Shelving notches constructed into the brick or stonework will serve as slides for the grates.

  6. Step 6

Add lava rock or stone to the fire pit. Introduce fuel and flame to the fire pit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add water service and electrical service to the fire pit structure for added convenience.
  • Ensure that all materials used in construction are rated for outdoor use and are weather-resistant.
  • Clean out ashes after every use for best results.
  • Use a fire screen to prevent ashes or embers from leaving the gas fire pit.
  • Never leave a fire unattended!
