The BLT is as American as apple pie. If you have a craving for a BLT, but don't eat meat, you can still satisfy your taste buds. Follow these simple steps to make a vegetarian BLT. It's as tasty as the original, and better for your heart and waistline.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 to 3 slices vegetarian bacon
  • 1 Slice provolone cheese (optional)
  • 1 Small red onion (optional)
  • 1 Avocado (optional)
  • 2 to 3 tomato slices
  • 3 to 4 pieces iceberg or romaine lettuce
  • 2 slices whole wheat bread
  • 1 tbsp. mayonnaise
  1. Step 1

Cook vegetarian bacon according to instructions on package. For best results, heat bacon in the oven. Be sure to watch the bacon closely, as it can burn quickly.

  2. Step 2

Wash and slice tomato to desired thickness. Any tomato will do, but vine-ripened tomatoes are especially juicy.

  3. Step 3

Prepare lettuce by washing and drying it. Iceberg lettuce is very crispy and adds nice texture to the sandwich, while romaine lettuce contains more nutritional value.

  4. Step 4

Lightly toast bread and spread mayonnaise on one slice. Make it with light mayo if you want to lower your fat intake.

  5. Step 5

Add lettuce, tomato and bacon to bread to complete your vegetarian BLT. Add cheese if desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a vegetarian BLT even lower in cholesterol, use vegan mayonnaise.
  • For a tasty, healthy twist on the original, add fresh avocado slices to your vegetarian BLT. Avocadoes are loaded with vitamin A and potassium.
  • To spice up your sandwich, add finely sliced red onion.
  • Serve with baked potato chips, which are often lower in cholesterol and contain no trans fat.
