Step 1
Move in three or four steps toward the batter and about two steps toward the second base bag before the pitch is thrown. The second baseman and short stop should get into this position to decrease the distance they will have to throw the ball to each other.
-
Step 2
Ensure you get the first out. The runner going to second base is the most important because he will be in scoring position. If you rush your throw before your double play partner gets near second base, you may not get anybody out.
-
Step 3
Pivot your body when making the throw. After catching the ball, leave your feet planted and pivot your body toward the second base bag in preparation to throw the ball.
-
Step 4
Throw the ball chest high to the player on second base. Throw with a three-quarter side arm delivery. Your arm should be at about 45 degrees from your head. Throw the ball directly to the second base bag so that it will arrive just as the other player reaches the bag.
-
Step 5
Let the player on second base see the ball. Get your glove out of the field of vision between you and your double play partner. If your partner needs a second to get to the bag, hold the ball up in the air so it is visible.
