To CHI your hair is to use a ceramic hair iron to straighten your hair. This ceramic coated iron adds shine and luster to hair and can straighten and smooth even the most curly or coarse hair while resulting in less damage than a traditional metal hair iron.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with clean, dry hair for best results. Wet or damp hair will not straighten as well and can result in unnecessary hair damage from a flatiron.

  2. Step 2

Apply to hair a cream or gel that's designed to protect your hair from heat styling with a flatiron. There are many on the market and excellent choices for high-end products sold at your hair stylist's salon.

  3. Step 3

Part your hair into several sections with clips to hold hair out of the way. A good rule of thumb is to make a section holding the crown area, a second of the hair located at the mid part of your head behind your ears and leave your ends at the back hanging.

  4. Step 4

Start as close to your scalp as is comfortable by clamping the CHI over small sections of hair, and with light pressure, hold the iron and pull downwards in one continuous motion until your hair is released. The hair will feel warm and straight and will generally only need one pass. Very coarse or very curly hair may require a second pass.

  5. Step 5

Continue completing that section of hair until it has all been straightened.

  6. Step 6

Release the mid section of the hair from the clip and proceed as in step 5 until all hair in the mid section of your head has been straightened with the CHI.

  7. Step 7

CHI the hair at the crown of your head and continue until all hair is straightened.

  8. Step 8

Apply a small amount of hair varnish or smoothing agent to hair with your hands to give your hair a finished look.

Tips & Warnings
  • To add shape to your hair, flick your wrist with the CHI flatiron near the ends of your hair in different directions.
  • Part your hair in another spot for extra body.
  • If you want a CHI hairstyle but don't have a lot of time in the morning, do it the night before. It holds well for several days and will only require a quick touch-up in the morning.
  • Many good-quality CHI appliances deliver so much heat that they are not recommended for household use. Be cautious that you do not burn your skin and keep well out of the reach of children.
