How to Enjoy a Day at the Texas State Fair

The Texas State Fair is the largest state fair in the country and is a spectacular yearly event that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It's held in the fall, usually from the end of September until the end of October. Here are just a few highlights of what the fair has to offer.

      Try some of the yummy food. They serve some of the best traditional fair food "on-a-stick" in the Midway. Mosey over to the Food and Fiber pavilion for samples of all kinds of Texas foods, such as beef, shrimp and biscuits. There are also many competitions for baking and canning, as well as speed-eating contests.

      Cheer your favorite team on at a college football game. Each year, the fair hosts football games between rival schools. Games are played at the Cotton Bowl, and admission to the fair is included with your game ticket.

      Start your engines at the Car Show. It is the only state fair in the country that features a car exhibition. Chevrolet is a sponsor of the event and hundreds of the newest models are displayed, as well as really interesting concept cars.

      Rock out to some live music at the Chevrolet Main Stage. There is a performance every day of the fair, but bigger acts perform on the weekends.

      Return to the Midway to ride some of the 70 rides. The fair boast the tallest ferris wheel in Texas, as well as a carousel from 1912.

      Milk a cow or experience one of the other livestock exhibits. All types of farm animals are on display and are available for interaction. You can even watch the Pig Races and wager on your favorite hog.

      Enjoy some theater in the Music Hall. It's hard to believe that you would find this at a fair, but major Broadway touring companies, such as The Lion King, have played for the event. Admission is not included in the price of your fair ticket.

      Jump on the Texas Skyway, an art-deco inspired gondola ride that stretches the expanse of the park. If you time it just right, you can see the Midway lights, a Vegas-like lightshow that happens several times a night.

Tips & Warnings

  • Book you hotels early if you are visiting from out of town. Several million people visit the fair each year, and hotels fill up quickly.
