Instructions

    • 1

Purchase live bait traps at a hardware or home improvement store, such as Home Depot.

    • 2

Place live traps 6 to 12 inches underground into the gopher tunnel. Install two traps facing away from each other for best results. Wear gardening gloves when setting traps to avoid human scent transfer to traps.

    • 3

Insert garden hose into the gopher's main tunnel and allow water to flow into passageway for at least 15 minutes. While water is flooding tunnels, inspect other gopher burrow entrances for escaping gophers.

    • 4

Purchase garden chicken wire at any home improvement store. Dig a trench to a depth of 2 feet around any problem area where you need to get rid of gophers. Sink the fencing into the ground and allow at least 1 foot of the fence to remain above ground.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider treating the area with a grub worm repellent liks Milky Spore to eliminate the gopher's favorite food.

  • Many of the poisons that exist to kill gophers may also kill any animal that eats the poisoned gopher.

  • Poisoning gophers with carbon monoxide gas can also expose humans to dangerous gas fumes.

  • Using poison near gardens may expose plants to dangerous chemicals.

Using water and fencing will not work. Water is going to ruin your foundation and the wire will still get chewed through by the gophers. If a gopher can chew into concrete, through cable and utility lines, I assure you, chicken wire and all other types of wire will not last. The metal breaks down in the soil from the water and natural moisture and iron in the soil. The only method for eliminating pocket gophers is trapping.
