How to Buy an Aquarium

Fish make great pets. They don't get in the way around the house and are relatively low maintenance. The biggest expense you will have with your fish is buying their home. It is important that your fish have the proper aquarium that will suit your needs as well as theirs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide how many and what kind of fish you want. Remember that keeping many fish or fish that will grow large requires a larger aquarium than a few smaller fish.

  2. Step 2

Select the size tank needed, based upon fish size and number. Bigger tanks will need a stand and can be hard to maneuver into the home. A larger tank will also need a solid, level floor that can hold the weight of large amounts of water.

  3. Step 3

Pick the type of aquarium you want. Glass is heavier than acrylic and the edges chip easier, but it's easier to clean and doesn't scratch as easy as acrylic. Acrylic aquariums don't weigh as much and don't distort the view of the fish, but they do scratch.

  4. Step 4

Shop around for aquariums. Smaller aquariums can be found at many department stores, while larger, higher quality aquariums can be purchased from pet shops or specialty fish stores.

  5. Step 5

Inspect the aquarium you want to purchase for scratches or chips. If buying a large aquarium, consider buying a stand for it to sit on or build your own. A smaller aquarium can usually be placed on a table or desk.

  6. Step 6

Buy the aquarium that fits your needs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many aquariums can be bought as a package, including the filter, pump and heater. If yours doesn't come with these supplies, purchase them separately.
  • Ask the pet store employee for advice on purchasing fish. Most of them are very knowledgeable about fish and what types of tank work best.
  • If building a stand, make sure you know what you are doing and use solid materials. Water is very heavy (one kilogram per liter) and if your stand cannot support your tank, you will have a huge mess.
  • Aquariums, especially larger ones with many fish, require lots of upkeep. They need cleaning regularly. If you do not have the time to care for an aquarium or the money to pay someone to care for the tank, consider purchasing a smaller aquarium.
  • Buying an aquarium and all the supplies can be very expensive. Make sure you research the equipment and prices before purchasing anything.
