How to Interact With a Police Officer

Most of us at one time or another will have an encounter with the police. Whether you have called for assistance or been pulled over for a traffic stop, how you interact with a police officer will affect the experience for both of you. Read on to learn how to interact with a police officer.

1. Treat the police officer with respect. Interact with the police in a professional manner. Remain calm and keep in mind he's just doing his job.
2. Listen carefully and answer all questions asked. The officer is skilled at seeking the facts that are important to the immediate issue. Answer the question that are asked and maintain eye contact.
3. Keep the focus on the matter at hand. The officer will address matters as she deems necessary. Assume that the officer means well, regardless of the reason for the interaction.
4. Be polite. She is a public servant who frequently operates in less than optimum circumstances. Say "Thank you," and mean it.
5. Law enforcement officers serve the interest of the community and respond to aid citizens in a variety of difficult situations. The police are there for you.

• Remember the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Think about how you would want your family member treated in that situation.
• Understand that a police officer is trained in the law, but is not there to serve as an attorney, a judge or a jury.
• Don't shout or curse at a police officer. No matter how upset you are, verbal abuse is counter-productive.
• Don't touch the officer or make a move that hints at physical aggression.
• Don't argue, even if you're in a highly emotional state.
