The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has created a program to help low-income families get help with their home energy costs. One of the services provided by the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is free weatherization of homes. Although this is a federally funded program, to find out if you and your family qualify for assistance from LIHEAP, you must contact your local grantee for information. Read on to learn how to get a home weatherized for free.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Go to the official Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) website.
Step2
Click on "Applying for LIHEAP assistance" under the heading "Consumer Information."
Step3
Choose the "LIHEAP State Grantee" link if you live in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. Choose the "LIHEAP Indian Tribe or Tribal Organization Grantee" if you are a member of an Indian tribe or tribal organization. Choose the "LIHEAP Insular Area Grantee" link if you live in American Samoa, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Step4
Follow the link of the state, tribe or insular area where you reside.
Step5
Use the information listed to contact your local LIHEAP office to determine their specific qualifications and criteria for assistance. These qualifications may be different from one LIHEAP office to the next.

Tips & Warnings

  • To contact a state about their LIHEAP program, start with their public inquiry telephone number, if listed.
  • Along with weatherization, LIHEAP also provides bill payment and energy crisis assistance.
  • Your local LIHEAP program determines the income and other possible eligibility requirements for your community. Therefore, assistance from LIHEAP is not guaranteed.
