All cars need replacement parts, that's why the dealer has a parts department. But the fact is, going to your dealer for a part for your Pinto is not going to be cheap. Here are some things you can try to get the parts you need to fix your car without breaking the bank.

1. Start with AutoZone. The easiest place to try first is an after-market parts store such as AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts. Here you can walk right in, get the part you need in new condition and walk right out.
2. Call a junkyard. Parts from a junkyard are used, so check the part carefully for damage and wear. Also check with your mechanic to see if they will install a used part.
3. Look at online auctions. Often times places like eBay Motors is the place to find car and truck parts you cannot find anywhere else, and since the competition is stiff, you will get the best price. Take into account shipping charges as well.
4. Search for online parts dealers. Places like the Car Parts website have a huge supply of car and truck parts for very reasonable rates, but if you are shipping an engine block, the freight is not going to be cheap.
5. Call your dealer and negotiate. Ask for the parts manager and tell them you want to talk about the pricing of the parts. In some cases, calling the manufacturer directly might help as well. Since they supply the dealers, sometimes they have a little extra pull. If you have replaced the same part several times over the years, calling the manufacturer may lead to a recall notice.
