How to Drive

Turn the key, press the gas and go, right? Well, driving is a little more complicated than that, especially for new or inexperienced drivers. Read this basic tutorial if you need to brush up your skills, but remember not to take those skills out onto the road unless you've got a valid driver's license.

    Instructions

      • 1

Insert the key in the ignition and turn clockwise to the "Start" position, until the engine starts. Once it does, allow the key to slide back to the "On" position. If driving in the dark or inclement weather, turn on your headlights. Put on your seatbelt.

      • 2

Put your foot on the brake pedal and release the emergency brake if it's on. With your foot still on the brake, put the car into gear. On a normal, automatic transmission column, "P" stands for park, "R" for reverse, "N" for neutral and "D" or "D1" for drive. To go forward, put the car into "Drive"; to go backwards, put the car in "Reverse."

      • 3

Place your hands on the steering wheel, one on either side. Take your foot off the brake pedal and move it to the accelerator. The car may roll a little even before you give it gas, so be prepared for this. Slowly accelerate until you get up to a comfortable speed.

      • 4

Take corners and sharp curves slowly, about 15 or 20 miles an hour. Signal with your turn signal at least 100 feet prior to turning corners at intersections. Turn the steering wheel in a controlled, hand-over-hand motion, as jerking the wheel could cause you to lose control of the car.

      • 5

Brake gradually, when possible. Of course, if you need to stop quickly, brake as fast as you need to, but braking slowly will make for a more comfortable drive. Begin braking about 100 feet away from a turn if you're going 50 miles an hour, and about 50 feet away if you're going 30 miles an hour. Starting with these general guidelines, get a feel for your own brakes and how fast you like stopping.

      • 6

Switch lanes by first checking your side and rear view mirrors for a clear path, then signaling with your turn signal in the appropriate direction. Then slightly turn the steering wheel in the direction you want to go. Straighten the wheel once you've switched lanes.

      • 7

Park the car and turn off the engine once you've reached your destination. To park, brake the car enough to slow you down to about 5 or 10 miles an hour, keeping your foot on the brake as you steer the car into a parking space. Come to a complete stop, then shift the car into "Park," turn off the headlights if they're on and turn the key to the "Off" position.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Keep your speed to within 5 miles an hour of the speed limit to avoid traffic tickets.

    • Pull to the side of the road and stop your car when emergency vehicles approach.

    • Don't drive without automobile insurance or you risk fines, imprisonment and the loss of your license.
