How to Build a Business Through Networking

The most challenging part of building a new business is getting yourself known. You can't expect to pull in clients just by putting your shingle out. The best way for a small business owner to get noticed is by networking. People who meet you face-to-face or through online forums will be more willing to give you a chance and, if you leave them satisfied, tell their friends about you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Start with online sources. Even the most unsociable small business owner can interact on message boards and blogs. The Business Owners Idea Café has been around since 1995, featuring information on starting and running your business, taxes and grants. Additionally, there is a "cyberschmooz" section that lets you talk with colleagues about marketing, finances, working at home and technology.
Step2
Check out your local business organizations. Even if you live in a small town, you never know where those local contacts might lead. Begin with your Chamber of Commerce. They're the best source for networking events in your area.
Step3
Search the Internet for business groups in your town. The San Francisco Small Business Network, for example, holds events and offers members help in job networking, health insurance and recovering bad checks.
Step4
Volunteer at local organizations. You create a positive image of your business while contributing to your community and making connections with potential customers and colleagues.
Step5
Serve on the board of directors or, if possible, sponsor an event. Check out the Without Borders website where you can search for volunteer opportunities by keyword and geographic area.
Step6
Join a professional organization. These can be pricey but the professional connections are worth it. You can also boast membership on your marketing materials.
Step7
Attend conferences in your industry. Besides expanding your knowledge, you'll be going where your prospects are and hearing about what they need. Start with the organizations you belong to, then check out the AllConferences website for a list of conferences by industry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Search Google for "small business resources" to find forums where you can chat with other small business owners.
  • Hire an intern or convince your spouse or a friend to go to networking events for you if you really loathe it. It's not as good as attending yourself, but if they can represent your business professionally, it's the next best thing.
  • One organization of interest to small business owners is Business Network International (BNI). They've got strict rules about joining and participating, but if you're willing to give what you get, it could bring you a steady stream of referrals.
  • Don't be too aggressive in selling yourself. You're there to get to know people. Do more listening than talking and always exchange business cards.
