A great cake depends on the proper mixing of dry and wet ingredients in a particular order. Be sure to follow recipes accurately and measure all ingredients. Identify which recipes can be mixed by hand and which require an electric mixer for best results.

  • Measuring spoons

  1. Step 1

    Pick out a cake recipe.

  2. Step 2

    Place all of the cake recipe ingredients in front of you.

  3. Step 3

    Gather your measuring utensils and place them on the counter next to the ingredients. Most cake recipes require measuring cups and measuring spoons.

  4. Step 4

    Measure all ingredients and add them to the mixing bowl or mixer in order of the recipe.

  5. Step 5

    Mix the ingredients together using a hand-held mixer or stand mixer.

  6. Step 6

    Transfer mixed batter to a prepared cake pan(s) and bake according to the recipe directions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some recipes call for you to mix the dry ingredients in one bowl, the wet ingredients in another, and then blending the contents of the dry and wet ingredient bowls together. If your recipe calls for this, follow the directions precisely.
  • It is helpful to measure out all the ingredients and place them on the counter in the order they are to be mixed.
  • Cover your stand mixer with a dishcloth when adding flour. This keeps the flour from drifting to other kitchen surfaces.
  • Always start your mixer on a low speed then gradually increase the speed to prevent splatters.
