Halloween, one of the most enjoyable holidays of the year, offers all ages the opportunity to play the child, whether by donning costumes or eating the candy meant for trick-or-treaters. A fun way to celebrate the holiday is by hosting a Halloween party. Take these steps to insure a good time with some favorite Halloween party games.

From Quick Guide: Halloween Games
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Forget about making a toilet-paper bride. All you need is a willing partner and a roll of toilet paper to create your very own Halloween mummy. Hold a contest to see who finishes quickest or does the best job.

  2. Step 2

Track a different kind of treasure with this updated version of a scavenger hunt. Send out teams armed with a video camera and a list of costumed Halloween characters. The first team back with film of all the characters wins, plus everyone will enjoy watching the videos.

  3. Step 3

Love Pictionary? How about playing a Halloween version? Write some Halloween words on slips of paper and put them in a bowl or a plastic pumpkin. One member of a team draws hints about the word without drawing the object or writing the word. The other members of the team have a two-minute time limit to guess what the word is.

  4. Step 4

Guess what's in the bag. Instead of putting your hand in a bowl of guts (cold cooked spaghetti) and eyeballs (peeled grapes), try placing five different items in five plastic lined paper bags. The object of the game is to guess what you're touching. Some ideas include mashed bananas, gelatin, pureed baby food and wet pretzel sticks.

  5. Step 5

Tell a horror story. Before the party, write down creepy phrases from books, movies and stories on index cards. (Examples: I want to drink your blood. It was a dark and scary night. The icy fingers of death touched…) Mix up the cards and have each person draw one. Then go around the circle with each person reading their phrase and telling a story. After a minute, the next person in the circle continues the story from the prompt on the index card.

  6. Step 6

Eat your fruits and veggies? No, play with them! No other fruit is so strongly associated with a holiday as the pumpkin is with Halloween. Play "Pass the Pumpkin" by passing a miniature pumpkin from chin to chin without dropping it. If the pumpkin is too large to fit under your neck, play Pumpkin Bowling instead. Fill ten empty 2 liter soda bottles with gravel. Decorate these bowling pins as ghosts by spray painting them white and drawing eyes and mouths with a black marker. Set up the pins as in bowling. See if you can get a strike with a pumpkin.

  7. Step 7

Enjoy another Halloween staple with candy corn. Tie a plastic pumpkin around the waist of one volunteer from each team. Whichever team tosses the most candy corn kernels into their team's basket in a given amount of time wins the Candy Corn Toss.

Tips & Warnings
  • Set your party atmosphere with spooky décor and Halloween music. How can you not act silly while listening to "The Monster Mash"?
  • Plan on a mixture of active and sit-down games, but don't overdo. Leave some free time as well.
  • Don't forget classic Halloween games like "bobbing for apples" that never go out of style.
