Middle school is that mysterious place between child and teen, and parenting during these years can be a challenge. Being prepared to give hugs, endure long silences and have firm boundaries can make this time memorable and even fun. Guiding while encouraging independence is the goal.

From Quick Guide: K-12 Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Discuss your expectations about middle school with your son or daughter and listen to their needs.

  2. Step 2

Set up reasonable and reachable academic goals for the first marking period. Understand this is a time of transition and it may take your child a few weeks to get up to speed in their new middle school environment.

  3. Step 3

Increase your child's responsibility for their own school work by having them use a daily planner.

  4. Step 4

Establish homework routines with a specific time and place for getting work done. Staying organized in middle school is the key to your child's success.

  5. Step 5

Set limits on extra-curricular activities based on their schedule and yours. Don't let studies take a back seat to other things.

  6. Step 6

Keep up bedtime routines, but add a bit of flexibility for your child's own choices.

  7. Step 7

Stay involved by communicating regularly with teachers.

Tips & Warnings
  • At the first sign of trouble, step in. If falling grades or social issues are a problem, schedule an appointment to meet with teachers. Middle schoolers need parental support to make this important step toward adulthood.
  • Giving too much freedom during the middle school years can be a big temptation. However, these years can make or break a child's secondary school experience. By giving increased independence when it's earned, a child's sense of self-esteem can really grow. Don't take your hands off too early.
