In the summer months, everyone wants to have a great looking tan. However, the risk of skin cancer often causes people to hide under an umbrella and cover their skin head to toe. With a little planning and precaution, you can finds ways to get a tan while reducing the risk of skin problems.

Step1
Choose a sunscreen with the proper SPF. No matter how light or dark your skin color, you should always tan with an applied sunscreen. The trick is to find one with a SPF that will allow you to tan and not burn.
Step2
Tan in the early morning hours or late afternoon. Avoid the sun mid-day when the sun is the strongest and can cause your skin to burn.
Step3
Wear a light colored bathing suit. Dark colored bathing suits will attract the sun to you.
Step4
Visit a tanning salon. The amount of UV rays is controlled in a tanning salon and reduces your chances of getting sunburn. Certain salons also offer a sunless tanning spray applied in a booth.
Step5
Apply a self-tanner. This is the safest way to tan without putting your skin at risk. You can choose the shade that looks best on you and most tanners are now streak-free. Test an area of your skin first before using a self-tanner.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is no guarantee that you can go out into the sun and be completely safe from the sun's damaging rays. Any sun exposure can lead to skin problems.
  • You should consider your medications before you tan. Some medications including certain birth control pills, acne medications and antihistamines, can cause the skin to burn.
  • Always protect your eyes from the sun while tanning. Wear goggles at a tanning salon and sunglasses on the beach.
