How to Hide a Geocache

Once you start geocaching--a treasure hunting game where you use a GPS to hide and seek containers with other participants--you may want to hide your own cache. Finding a spot to hide your geocache can be a fun and rewarding experience as you explore new and familiar areas and plot out a great spot for others to visit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Research potential cache locations in which to hide the container. Think about how easy the location is to get to, how easy the cache will be to find and whether its placement in a particular area will cause undue concern over what might be contained in the cache.
Step2
Find out the rules and regulations for the areas that you are considering. The National Park Service, for example, does not allow caches within parks. Check with local or state park officials to make sure that you can place your geocache in a specific area. You should also seek permission from private property owners.
Step3
Place your cache with respect for the environment. Look for a unique spot but watch for delicate ground cover or animal habitats. You should also try to choose a spot that will not be a target for vandalism.
Step4
Get exact coordinates for your geocache. This can be difficult depending on your GPS unit, but the Geocaching website has more information on getting it in those situations. Make note of the position on the cache, in the logbook and on something to take with you. Secure the geocache with a rock or other item to prevent it from moving.
Step5
Report your cache online at one of the geocaching sites so that others will be able to find it. The Geocaching site is one of the main sites where caches are listed.
Step6
Maintain your geocache by checking on it occasionally making sure that it's in the correct position and in good condition.
