A dog park is typically an area set aside specifically for dogs and their owners to exercise and socialize in an off-leash environment. Many are fenced, but some are general areas within specific city parks. To find a dog park, you just need to do a little searching and talking to other dog owners.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Check with your local park and recreation office to see if they maintain any dog parks. Many dog parks are owned and operated by the city or township, although some are privately owned. You can call the parks department, visit their website or stop by the office.
Step2
Ask other dog owners that you know or see walking their dogs if they are aware of any dog parks in the area. People who have medium to large dogs in particular are more likely to know of area dog parks than owners of toy breeds.
Step3
Talk to your vet or the office staff at your veterinarian's office for their recommendations on local dog parks. Most offices will have at least one person familiar with dog parks in the area and can talk to you about them. You can also find out information on other dog-friendly locations to visit around town.
Step4
Question the staff at doggie day cares, pet supply stores, groomers and shelters about dog parks. You can often find out a great deal of information about parks, events and other places to visit with your dog through these avenues. Particularly with smaller stores and rescues, get to know the staff and they will likely keep you up-to-date on what's going on in your city in regards to dogs.
Step5
Search online for dog parks. You may find websites for specific dog parks or lists of dog parks by state. As the number of dog parks are increasing, the lists may not be up-to-date or may not have the correct information. Call ahead for current information on any park that you find. The Dog Park website and the Dog-Friendly website are great places to start your search.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before heading out to the dog park, read up on the park's regulations and policies. Some may require a fee or permit in order to enter and others may have certain dog restrictions.
