How to Find Property Values in Virginia

Property values can tell you a lot about the property you own, your neighbors property or that vacation property you have had your eye on for years. Here are a few places to find property values in Virginia.

Instructions

  1. Free Internet Searches

Search your county tax assessor's website. The tax assessor's office usually has a county map and a search engine that will allow you to search for a property by street name or owner name. The City of Williamsburg, Virginia, for example, offers the Tax Parcel Information System, which includes a map that allows you to choose a specific property. The site will tell you the tax assessed value and for how much the property last sold.

Visit the Yahoo! Real Estate website to retrieve property values. Yahoo! offers a search engine that allows you to type in a street address, and a map opens up with houses that have sold in the area and their selling price. The website also lists the change in property value over a period of time.

    • 3

Search for property values on other websites. Several are fee-based, but some allow a single introductory search. The FSBO America website is an example of semi-free property value search. If you only want to know one property value, this may satisfy your interest.

Contact a real estate agent and ask what property values are in a particular area. Often there are newer recruits who are more than happy to meet a prospective client and will easily divulge the information.

    • 5

Contact a real estate attorney. Closing attorneys must do a title search and often have the resources to find property values. If they don't do title search-type work, they probably know someone who does. Ask for a reference.

    • 6

Contact a title search company. The company will be able to access the public record that lists who owns the property, what was paid for it, the tax value and any mortgages that might be on the property.
