Use a Knee Brace

A knee brace is one of many orthopedic devices available to help people with joint injuries, muscle strains or other debilitations. A brace can allow valuable healing to occur without limiting mobility or movement. Using your knee brace properly is just as important as selecting the right brace. Follow these steps to correctly use a knee brace.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the brace for defects. Prior to use, you should make sure that it is in perfect working condition. Check for frayed or stretched fabric and make sure that any stabilizers or closures are properly secured. If you find any of these imperfections, do not use the brace as it may aggravate your injury.

    • 2

Put your brace on early in the day. Legs naturally swell throughout the day, and a knee injury will mean swelling as well. Putting your brace on in the morning will limit the amount of swelling in your knee and leg, which will make it easier to put on the brace.

    • 3

Position the brace as it will be worn. Align the front of the brace with the front of your leg prior to pulling it on. Trying to rotate it around your leg after it is over your knee will be uncomfortable and may cause further strain to your knee.

    • 4

Use both hands. Hold the brace firmly in each hand and pull it over your foot and ankle evenly rather than pulling on one side first and then the other. This will allow your leg to adjust the brace's compression evenly.

    • 5

Pull the brace on firmly. Do not tug the brace upward as this may jar your knee. Use one smooth motion to pull the brace over your foot and calf and into position over your knee.

    • 6

Adjust closures and stabilizers if necessary. If your brace has special features to keep your knee or patella stable or closures to hold it in place, secure these firmly around your knee. If the closures or stabilizers cause you pain or do not feel that they fit properly after you have attempted to adjust it, do not use the brace.

    • 7

Wear your brace according to your doctor's instructions. If you have been instructed to wear your knee brace during certain activities or for a certain amount of time each day, wear your brace accordingly. Do not leave your knee brace on overnight.
