Using a cane can be beneficial to anyone that finds their mobility or stability limited. Canes allow senior citizens and individuals recovering from leg and foot injuries or surgeries to move with the same freedom they have always had. Proper use of a cane is important. Follow these steps to correctly use a cane.

on 6/14/2008 I disagree with the cane directions. The cane is usually held on the side opposite the injured leg. Move the cane with the injured leg. The cane opposite reduces the weight on the injured leg. I know it seems wrong but physics says it's correct. If you need support on the injured side, use a crutch.

on 3/7/2008 step three above goes against nearly every other site out there--and against EVERY site of those who produce walking canes. They all say that the can should be opposite the injury--regardless of which side is dominant.
