Choosing the right college roommate is a difficult task whether you live on or off campus. Your roommate impacts your friendships, grades and the experiences you have in college. Take your time with this critical decision and choose a roommate who makes your college years memorable for all the right reasons.

From Quick Guide: Survive College
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide exactly what you want from a roommate. Before living in a college dorm you must fill out a questionnaire about your personality, likes and dislikes. The more details you supply, the better match the school finds for you. If you plan to live in an off-campus apartment or house, write down the qualities you want in a roommate. Consider your study habits, sleep needs, financial needs, allergies, music tastes, TV preferences and whether you smoke or drink. Place an advertisement for a roommate around the school. Tell your friends you are looking for a roommate.

  2. Step 2

Ask friends and acquaintances if they want to room with you. If you know someone attending your school and you both are staying in a dorm, request for her to be your roommate. If you do not want to live in a dorm, ask if she wants to share an apartment off campus.

  3. Step 3

Review all applicants. Before choosing your roommate, interview at least five people. If you are staying in a dorm, ask to review possible matches for a roommate. Most campuses let you review some questionnaires to find a good roommate.

  4. Step 4

Discuss important information with your roommate before you move in. The school gives you contact information for your new roommate if you ask for it. Call your roommate and get to know him. Discuss sleeping habits, study habits, work schedules and payment of rent and bills.

Tips & Warnings
  • It often works better to room with an acquaintance rather than a close friend.
  • In a dorm setting, if you and your roommate are not getting along, apply for a room change.
