Step 1
Decide whether or not you will make the nursery gender specific. The decorating possibilities are endless for boys, girls and unisex. If you want to use this nursery for all of your babies to come, you might want to go with a unisex themed room. For those who don't find out the sex of the baby, a unisex room is best so the room will be ready for baby when he or she arrives.

Step 2
Research ideas on the Internet. The Better Homes and Gardens website is a good place to start. They have some great tools on their website. Start getting ideas from their "Decorating Gallery." Once you click that link, choose the "Nursery" link to view pictures of nursery room ideas. Using pictures on the Internet or in magazines you see in stores, pick out a theme for your baby's room.
-
Step 3
Shop for baby furniture. Cribs, changing tables, dressers and rocking chairs are some items you may need. You can buy these online or in stores near you. Do a search on baby furniture to find available retailers online. The phone book will help you locate stores in your area.
-
Step 4
Pick out bedding that will complement the nursery theme. The JCPenney website offers numerous bedding options. Most crib sets come with the comforter, crib sheet, bumper pad and crib ruffle. You can usually buy accessories to complement the crib set. Wall hangings, lamps and curtains are some accessories available. If you don't like JCPenney's selection of bedding, do an Internet search on nursery/baby bedding and decorating. Or, if you find something you like in a catalog or store and you know a talented seamstress, you can have your bedding handmade.
-
Step 5
Purchase wall covering. Wall murals, paint or wall paper are good choices. Think about the colors you want in your baby room. It will help if you have the bedding before you pick out your wall covering. On the Better Homes and Gardens website, there is a tool called "Color-a-Room." Either login or complete the easy online registration to become a free Better Homes and Gardens member. Once logged in, the Color-a-Room tool pops up. This tool allows you to pick a room and choose some colors to put on the walls, carpet, ceiling and bedding. Plug in the colors you have in mind for your baby's room to get an idea of what it might look like.
-
Step 6
Put the room together. It is important to paint, wall paper or place wall murals first. Protect the bedding and furniture from paint spills and drips with drop cloths or plastic covering. Next place the furniture. Put in the bedding and accessories in place last.
