1
Get a split schedule that allows enough time for your commute. If you live an hour away from your job and only have a three-hour break in your schedule, you will not have enough time to get much accomplished during your time off if you intend to go home during the break.

2
Talk to your employer to be sure that your schedule will be set every week. Going back and forth from split shift, to day then to night shift can create havoc on your system as well as your household.

3
Plan your time off between shifts. Whether you are sleeping, running errands or spending quality time with friends or family, you need to plan and stick to it. Much too often the time will get away from you and your time off will be gone with nothing accomplished.

4
Sleep enough hours in the day or at night so that you are able to function proficiently at work. It may take some time to get accustomed to this split schedule, especially if one of your segments of work is at night.

Find others that work your shift in your area to car pool or use public transportation. The cost of gasoline can make any financial benefit disappear if your home is far from your workplace.
