How to Add New Fonts to a Macintosh

Fonts are an essential element to any desktop publishing or graphic design project. Adding new fonts to your Mac will provide more choices for creativity and professionalism. The process to add new fonts can be done with a few quick, short steps.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Macintosh computer
  • Font files
  1. Step 1

    Close any open applications. This will help to minimize the chances of an application "sticking" when you install the fonts.

  2. Step 2

    Open the disk or folder that contains the fonts you want to install.

  3. Step 3

    Select the font suitcases for those that you want to add to your machine. When adding PostScript Type 1 fonts, also select the printer outline files.

  4. Step 4

    Drag and drop the selected fonts into the Fonts folder which is in the Library folder.

  5. Step 5

    Return to your application to use one of your new fonts.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you use a font management utility such as FontBook to manage your fonts, follow the instructions for the program to install and remove fonts.
