Step 1
Try to be flexible in your dates, times and departure cities. Travel midday Tuesday through Thursday. Fly last minute, especially if last minute fares are available on weekends. Stay over a Saturday night during your trip. Avoid traveling on holidays.
-
Step 2
Look at several websites and a variety of airlines to compare and save money. Check package deals that may include car and/or hotel.
-
Step 3
Fly out of a larger airport if possible. The more flights that come in and out, the less expensive the tickets usually are. Use the same airline when booking roundtrip tickets.
-
Step 4
If you can't fly at the last minute, buy your tickets as far in advance as possible, keeping in mind that seven to 21 days prior to flying will make a huge difference in ticket price. Look at a flight's price difference one to three days prior and one-to-three days after your scheduled trip.
-
Step 5
Request etickets, as they are free and speed up your booking and travel. Don't bother requesting a paper ticket.
-
Step 6
Plan ahead for possible layovers. Although they may make your day longer, they usually will save you quite a bit of money in vouchers and other bonuses.
-
Step 7
Sign up for a reduced-fare website to notify you when the price has hit your target price.
