The social sciences encompass a variety of disciplines, all dealing with how human beings affect the world. An undergraduate degree in a field of social sciences opens up a world of possibilities in the job market because many of the specialties are adaptable to the commercial, government and nonprofit sectors.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Study the course offerings from several institutions. Some offer a general undergraduate degree covering various aspects of the social sciences like anthropology, sociology, environmental studies, geography, history and psychology. However, for maximum employability, consider narrowing your choice to a single or double major.
Step2
Look to other disciplines to supplement your core studies. An undergraduate degree in anthropology or sociology is enhanced by studies in folklore. Courses in business, management, communications, public relations or marketing make you an attractive prospect to employers in both the commercial and nonprofit sectors, no matter what your discipline.
Step3
Find an internship position that allows you to build on your undergraduate studies. Help out at a national history museum if you're studying environmental planning. Sociology majors will find experience with a human services organization to be beneficial.
Step4
Join the National Social Science Association (NSSA). Their nominal yearly fee gets you two e-newsletters, access to their "National Social Science Journals," and a chance to submit articles and book reviews to their journal. They hold a technology conference, a summer seminar and a professional development conference every year.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your undergraduate degree can get you entry-level positions but you may need a masters or Ph.D. if you want to go into management.
