A bachelor's degree in communications combines public relations, advertising and marketing, media and business. You'll learn how to get a message across and which medium to choose. You need to be able to express yourself well both in writing and in speech.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Check out the courses offered for a bachelor's degree from a variety of schools. Expect to learn about theories of mass communications, public relations and journalism as well as practical skills like writing, editing, speaking and photography.
Step2
Focus your course of studies. Take classes on radio and TV for broadcast news. Advertising and PR studies are essential if you want to make it in the business world. You'll need to sharpen your research, writing and editing skills if you want to go into journalism.
Step3
Find an internship position as soon as possible. That experience will be crucial after you get your bachelor's degree when you're looking for your first job. Local nonprofit organizations are a great place to start. Contact their communications, public relations or publications department to see what's available.
Step4
Connect with other students who are working toward their bachelor's degree in communications. Join the Public Relations Student Society of America. You'll find news, a blog, internship and job postings, and discussion forums.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't make the mistake of thinking you don't need to learn about PR and advertising. That training will help you with journalism and broadcast news too.
