The PayPal debit card works much like a bank card, though there are a few key differences. PayPal is not legally a bank, so some regulations, such as FDIC protection, do not apply. However, PayPal does a good job of fighting fraudulent uses of its cards and replacing any stolen funds. Because of this, the debit card is a safe way to purchase items online and out in the world.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer and Internet connection
  • PayPal account
  • Bank account
  • PayPal debit card
  1. Step 1

Sign up for a PayPal account. Use a current bank account as a funding source for your account. Watch your bank statement for two small deposits from PayPal, and report the amounts in order to confirm the account.

  2. Step 2

Sign up for the debit card. Confirm receipt of the card when it comes, and activate it as described in the accompanying letter.

  3. Step 3

Use the PayPal debit card just like a bank debit card. Purchase items using a PIN to have the transaction processed like a debit. Choose the credit card processing option, with no PIN for purchases, and get 1 percent back from PayPal.

  4. Step 4

Get funds in the debit account, either by receiving money online from eBay sales, or other sites that pay through PayPal. Use your bank account to fund the debit account anytime it's needed.

  5. Step 5

Use the debit card just like a credit card to purchase items online. Stay safer in your online purchases by getting a temporary, one use card number, that can be used for your transactions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be as careful with the PayPal card just as you would a bank card. Report it anytime it is lost or stolen.
