A trip to the bowling alley is a fun and relaxing adventure into an establishment that can trace its roots back to ancient Egypt. One of the most popular pastimes in the world, bowling is a game that all ages will enjoy and that doesn't require a lot of skill to play, although you will score better if you learn to throw a strike every now and then.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Call before heading over to the bowling alley to check if they are busy. If it is a league day, you may need to wait a few hours to get a lane.

  2. Step 2

Approach the counter that is located right next to the entrance. An attendant will assign you a lane.

  3. Step 3

Tell the attendant your shoe size and he will get you a pair of bowling shoes. You can't wear street shoes on the lanes since they damage the boards. Don't worry, they disinfect the shoes all the time so you probably won't catch a foot fungus!

  4. Step 4

Take your stuff to your assigned lane, which will have several chairs and perhaps a table available for your use. Place any stuff you have either on the seats or under the seats, out of the way of other bowlers.

  5. Step 5

Put on your bowling shoes and tie the shoelaces securely so you won't trip in the lane. Slide your street shoes under a seat out of the way of the other bowlers.

  6. Step 6

Scan the racks for a ball that is the right weight for you and that has the correct size finger holes. Your fingers should fit snugly, not tightly, into the holes in the bowling ball. Try to get the heaviest ball you can comfortably lift and swing since you can always switch later if you find it isn't the ball for you.

  7. Step 7

Place your bowling ball in the return rack on your side of the lane. If people have left their old bowling balls in the rack, you may want to remove them so they won't be in your way.

  8. Step 8

Set up the score board. The new scoring machines are automated so you will probably only need to enter the players' names. If you have difficulty working the scoring machine, you may call the attendant to assist with the set-up.

  9. Step 9

    Bowl!

Tips & Warnings
  • Bowling alleys typically have a snack bar, so bring extra money for some nachos or french fries.
  • If you're having trouble hitting the pins when you bowl, ask the attendant if someone can show you how to bowl better.
  • If you fall in love with bowling, visit the pro shop to buy a customized bowling ball in your favorite color.
