There is a lot more to tennis than just hitting a ball over a net. Before seriously stepping onto an officiated court, read and understand the official International Tennis Federation rule book and other regional regulation handbooks. For unofficiated tennis matches, The Code provides further guidance on appropriate etiquette. This is a brief summary of what you need to know to behave like a good tennis sportsman.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Understand that all players are equally responsible for efficient ball management. The server should have easy access to balls kept in pockets, piled near center court or thrown by other players. To decrease time wasted corralling balls, everyone should make an effort to not hit or throw balls too hard and pick up balls within their vicinity.
Step2
Announce the score loudly at the start of each game and point if you are the server. It is inappropriate for receiver(s) to question the score once the ball has been served, particularly if the server has won the point.
Step3
Be responsible for honorably calling balls on your side of the net. If you are unsure whether a ball was within bounds, your opponent gets the benefit of the doubt. When playing doubles, graciously defer to the judgment of your partner should he have a better view of the shot.
Step4
Behave always in a gracious and courteous manner, whether you are winning or losing. A positive attitude enhances the fun of competition.
