All aboard! Here are some travel tips to help you appropriately behave within the bounds of passenger train etiquette.

From Quick Guide: Riding the Railway
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the dress code. For long distance train travel, passengers generally dress in casual, comfortable clothing such as jogging suits, t-shirts and jeans. Shoes are required when moving throughout the train, but they may be removed at your seat.

  2. Step 2

Respect open seating. In most train cars, passengers are permitted to select any available seat. Do not deny use of open seats. This is considered rude behavior. Place carry-on items in appropriate storage areas. If you are traveling alone, you may be asked to sit with a stranger. This ensures that couples, families and groups can be seated together.

  3. Step 3

Manage your children. For the safety and comfort of the children and other passengers, make sure that your children are supervised and engaged in activities that do not bother other passengers. Inquire as to whether a specific space has been designated as a play area for children

  4. Step 4

Smoke only in designated areas. Be mindful that smoke-filled clothing can be an irritant to other passengers seated in your train compartment.

  5. Step 5

Watch your noise level. Be considerate of others who do not want to overhear loud conversations, music and video games. Always use earphones or headphones with electronic equipment. Keep sound at a low or moderately high volume. If you snore, consider using one of the over-the-counter remedies available at most drugstores. On the other hand, it is entirely acceptable to wear earplugs if you are particularly sensitive to noise.

  6. Step 6

Adhere to dining policy. You are permitted to bring your own food for your train ride. However, this food cannot be eaten in the dining car. You must eat it at your seat. That said, do not bring food that may be problematic for other passengers. No one wants to sit in a car reeking of liver and onions. Be sure to clean up after yourself.

  7. Step 7

Maintain a positive attitude. Inevitably, there will be some challenges with train travel. There may be long lines, irritating passengers, or schedule delays. Take it all in stride, relax and have fun. Train travel is meant to be a leisurely adventure.
